The object lends it’s name and some of its characteristics from a series of bunkers I encountered in the coastal areas of The Netherlands. Some of these smaller bunkers were called a tobruk. Formally these bunkers can be characterised through their independence, scale of elements, the weathered almost camouflaged surface and overall anonymity of the architecture, some of these aspects were intriguing to me and found their way into the container. Its functionality is expressed in the way the object is composed, pragmatic interventions in a rectangular box that should be read as a gesture of function. The sizes and proportions are based on the openings of these bunkers that were indicative of human presence.
